奥巴马胜选演说·文言版
枪：
前些天，奥巴马胜选演说开始在网上流传，就想起：或可搞个文言版本出来。
不过当时没想自己弄，只去某文言网站留了条言，提了个建议。结果，过了几天去看，发现并没有动静。于是才想，或者可以自己弄弄看？
于是，上周五译了两三段，周末用工作加班、看碟读书之外的时间把剩下的部分也搞出来了。下边就是。
我没什么文言功底，更没拿文言写过东西。来不了古奥的，只会用些浅近的夹生文言，大概意译一下。如果说范本的话，倒是有些地方故意模仿民国时各路军政要人通电、讲演的语气……像不像三分样吧。
本来想，还有一个办法是更加洒狗血一点儿，在文言里加上各路方言土语俏皮话儿歇后语之类。那就是另一个玩儿法了。
译好之后，有点儿没信心，发给某文言小能手看了一下，问这玩意儿可以一贴么？人家鼓励我半天，说已经不错了，贴吧。可是不久，又发来人家自己翻译的几段，一看我就晕了——先秦范儿的……
其实，当年林语堂还曾以夹生北京话翻译《独立宣言》，如今我以半吊子文言翻译奥巴马讲演，算是很对得起他们了。
咳，嘛对得起对不起的！乐呵儿乐呵儿得了——

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.
余尝闻世人有疑，不知当今美利坚凡事皆可成就耶？开国先贤之志方岿然于世耶？民主之伟力不减于昔年耶？凡存诸疑者，今夕当可释然。
It’s the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different, that their voices could be that difference.
今夕之释然，皆蒙美利坚民众之协力——学塾祠庙之外，市井乡野之间，万千父老心焦似焚，苦待竟日，愿献一票之力。其中，平生未尝涉国事者，数亦不少，而今有此义举，皆因一念不衰——今夫天下，非同既往，愿发吁天之声，必成动地之势。
It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states. We are, and always will be, the United States of America.
今夕之释然，皆仰吾国同胞之齐心——何谈贫富老幼之差、党社宗族之异，惶论发肤肌体之别、志趣爱恶之分。吾国既以“合众”为名，吾辈则更无疏离之意，红蓝二党并肩而立，数十邦州挽手相合，无分你我，共称一家，昂然于世，齐声一呼，天下乃有此释然。
It’s the answer that led those who’ve been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.
今夕之释然，皆因愤懑者之镇静，忧惧者之勇气，犹疑者之笃定——平素世间种种，消磨其志向，溃灭其梦想，而值此风云之际，除旧更新，当仁不让，倾力而动乾坤者，更何人哉！
It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America.
俟之诚久，其志弥坚。幸天地明察，乃有今日，乃有此刻，乃有此一选举，乃有我亿万美利坚大好国民——吾邦之大变革，方得自兹而始也！
A little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious call from Sen. McCain.
Sen. McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he’s fought even longer and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader. I congratulate him; I congratulate Gov. Palin for all that they’ve achieved. And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation’s promise in the months ahead.

I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn’t start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and $20 to the cause.

It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation’s apathy who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep.
It drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the millions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for the people has not perished from the Earth.

For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime — two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century.

Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us.There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after the children fall asleep and wonder how they’ll make the mortgage or pay their doctors’ bills or save enough for their child’s college education. There’s new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to build, and threats to meet, alliances to repair.

There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won’t agree with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the government can’t solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it’s been done in America for 221 years — block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.
逶迤坎坷，份内之事。异见争端，料必有之。国中之政府，谅非无所不能者。余所秉承不移者，唯忠信矣。倘有危难于前，必无欺瞒于世。诸君言论臧否，纵悖逆相左之议，余必当洗耳以聆。于此之外，更当恳请诸君，不吝心血，致力报效，以振吾美利坚重兴之业。余亦别无他想，唯盼吾侪协力，延继吾国既肇二百二十一年之大统，汇涓滴之力，而成万世之业。
What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It can’t happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice.
昔年冬日，余有志于斯，投身此业，屈指算来，倏然近二载矣。当此秋夜，追思反省，仍无溃退逃亡之意。选战之胜，无非一役之功，余梦寐所思矢志所求者，非在乎此。溯源究本，此役之胜，不过革世变时一大好良机耳。倘止步于斯，垂手而待，或无诸君倾力相援，则壮志丰功，无非泡影，诸般梦想，终必虚妄。
So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other. Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it’s that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers. In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people.
爱国之心，报国之念，吾人固有之，然逢今日之世，此心此念亦当一变——吾辈各执己业，益当各竭其力，各尽其命，非但为一己之利，而更期普世之荣。今岁，金融业界动荡多舛，细审观之，当可以之为鉴——实业之损，亦是金融之伤。可知，既在邦域之内，吾辈荣辱休戚，皆相与共矣！
Let’s resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Let’s remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.Those are values that we all share.
党争纷纭，阴谋卑鄙，愚鲁无知，皆腐蚀清白、惑乱政局之弊也，其缘由已久，余今愿与诸君协力，共灭除之。昔年曾有此郡先贤，执共和党之帜，而掌总统府之权。自强独立，自由统一等信念，皆斯人之所倡，亦吾辈之所宗。
And while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress. As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies but friends. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.

To those — to those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security: We support you. This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one that’s on my mind tonight’s about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. She’s a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.
今岁选战，多开亘古之先，屡传千秋佳话。感我至深者，亚特兰大之老妪安?尼克松?库帕也——库氏之一票，于数百万美利坚民众之选票无异，其所以引人称奇者，其人今岁高龄一百有六矣。

At a time when women’s voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can.

When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of common purpose. Yes we can.

When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can.

She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that “We Shall Overcome.” Yes we can.

A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination. And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change. Yes we can.
俟科学昌明于世，创想通贯一时，既登广寒之阙，又溃柏林之墙。洋洋乎！有百年如是，乃见今岁选战中，库氏之一票。浩浩兮！一百零六载交锋更迭，方有美利坚今日之变革——吾辈既在，无所不能！
America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves — if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?
转眼兴亡过手，而今迈步从头。追昔抚今，不禁扪心而问——俟再历百年岁月，倘吾等后辈儿孙，亦有得享高寿如库氏者，复可见何等之变数？吾辈今日之功，他年可得而见之乎？
This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment. This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope. And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can’t, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.

What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. She’s a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment. This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope. And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can’t, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.

贴心朋友必会的十句话
1. do us a favor
「帮个忙」这句话也是超级常用的，日常生活中要请人帮忙的情况很多，也许是请人帮你拿一下东西，也许是请人帮你带便当，都可以用上这句Do me a favor.。要请人帮忙还有另一种说法，就是May I ask a favor of a you?，不过记得在别人帮完后，别忘了向人家说声谢谢！Could you do me a favor?或是Could you give me a hand?这算是比较正式而礼貌的讲法。有时候要请别人帮忙不太好意思说时，可以贼一点地说Could you do me a little favor?「能不能帮我一个小忙？」把对方弄上钩再说。
2. be way out of line
其实这句话从字面上就可以猜到它的意思了，out of line「越线」就是意指「逾矩、过分」；这条line可以把它当做界限、容忍范围看待。要特别介绍way的用法，这里是当副词用，就是「远远地、大大地、非常」的意思，属于夸张化的说法，比如要形容「很高」，如果你觉得too high还不能描绘出你要表达的高，你就可以在too high前加一个way，用way too high来形容。所以You're way out of line.就是「你实在是太过分了。」就是要对方收敛一点，别太超过！
3. It's not to reason why, it's but to do and die.
这句的意思就是「别问原因，尽管去做」，原句应是Ours is not to reason why,ours is but to do and die.，这是出自十九世纪的一首古诗，这里的ours所指的是our responsibility「我们的责任」，即是说「我们的职责不是在问为什么，我们的职
责就是鞠躬尽瘁死而后已。」因此这句话的使用时机，就是叫人废话少说，少开口、多做事，当然用来拍马屁时也蛮好用的，不妨参考看看！
4. I'm all ears.
通常美国人是说I'm all your ears.，来看看字面上的意思「我把所有的耳朵都给你了」稍作修饰后，不就是咱们中文里的「洗耳恭听」吗？假设你的好朋友失恋了来找你诉苦，此时你就可以贴心地说I'm all your ears.，搞不好因此掳获美人心，从此过着幸福快乐的日子。
5. by all means
means是「方法、手段」，by all means是「必定、一定、无论如何」的意思，有of course「当然」之意，通常是加强语气之用。比如人家邀请你去吃饭，你就可以说I'll come by all means.「我一定会来的。」要注意的是，by any means同样也是「一定、无论如何」之意，但是通常用在否定句之中。还有一个词组by no means，这个的意思就是「绝不」
6. in my way of thinking
依字面上之意，是「以我思考的方式」，所以in my way of thinking就是「以我看来，就我而言」的意思。同样的意思，你也可以说as far as I'm concerned，或者简单一点的in my opinion。这都是一种谦虚表达意见的方式，在发言之前先声明这纯属个人的想法。
7. What's this all about?
这句话的意思是「这是怎么回事？」相当于What's up with that?，这句也完全等于What happened?或是What's going on?，当你搞不清楚状况时，这几句话都可以为你除疑解惑。不过用What's this all about?来寻求解答时，是比较想知道事情的来龙去脉，而不仅只是想知道发生什么事而已。
8. a sight for soar eyes
这是美语中一个口语化的说法，「看到你真是消除眼睛疲劳」意思就是「人见人爱的悦目之物」，白话一点就是「见到你真好」，有点像是见到救星的那种感觉，或者是看到好久不见的朋友，也可以用上这一句话。比如说你刚吃完一顿大餐，酒足饭饱之余才发现没带钱，正当不知所措准备进厨房洗碗时，看到了好友就在别桌用餐，总算露出一线生机，你就可以跟你的朋友说：You are a sight for soar eyes.
9. get a word in
word 当作「话」来用，按字面上来解释get a word in就是「插话」的意思，比较特殊的是，这里是指「（在别人不停地谈话时），找到插话的机会」，而且一般大部分是用否定方式not get a word in edgewise (edgeways)表示，如Jean didn't let me get a word in edgewise.「珍不让我有插话的机会。」因此，每当有人高谈阔论，滔滔不绝，说得让你连插句话的机会都没有时，你就可以利用此一佳句跟人抱怨。
10. You're going to love it here.
要表达喜欢一个地方，你可以说I like / love this place.，或是说成更道地的I like /love it here.。这里的it是指「气氛」atmosphere而言，若是你要跟别人挂保证，担保他一定会喜欢上某个地方，你就可以对他说You're going to (You'll) like/ love it here.。 [原始链接]

「帮个忙」这句话也是超级常用的，日常生活中要请人帮忙的情况很多，也许是请人帮你拿一下东西，也许是请人帮你带便当，都可以用上这句Do me a favor.。要请人帮忙还有另一种说法，就是May I ask a favor of a you?，不过记得在别人帮完后，别忘了向人家说声谢谢！Could you do me a favor?或是Could you give me a hand?这算是比较正式而礼貌的讲法。有时候要请别人帮忙不太好意思说时，可以贼一点地说Could you do me a little favor?「能不能帮我一个小忙？」把对方弄上钩再说。
2. be way out of line
其实这句话从字面上就可以猜到它的意思了，out of line「越线」就是意指「逾矩、过分」；这条line可以把它当做界限、容忍范围看待。要特别介绍way的用法，这里是当副词用，就是「远远地、大大地、非常」的意思，属于夸张化的说法，比如要形容「很高」，如果你觉得too high还不能描绘出你要表达的高，你就可以在too high前加一个way，用way too high来形容。所以You're way out of line.就是「你实在是太过分了。」就是要对方收敛一点，别太超过！
3. It's not to reason why, it's but to do and die.
这句的意思就是「别问原因，尽管去做」，原句应是Ours is not to reason why,ours is but to do and die.，这是出自十九世纪的一首古诗，这里的ours所指的是our responsibility「我们的责任」，即是说「我们的职责不是在问为什么，我们的职
责就是鞠躬尽瘁死而后已。」因此这句话的使用时机，就是叫人废话少说，少开口、多做事，当然用来拍马屁时也蛮好用的，不妨参考看看！
4. I'm all ears.
通常美国人是说I'm all your ears.，来看看字面上的意思「我把所有的耳朵都给你了」稍作修饰后，不就是咱们中文里的「洗耳恭听」吗？假设你的好朋友失恋了来找你诉苦，此时你就可以贴心地说I'm all your ears.，搞不好因此掳获美人心，从此过着幸福快乐的日子。
5. by all means
means是「方法、手段」，by all means是「必定、一定、无论如何」的意思，有of course「当然」之意，通常是加强语气之用。比如人家邀请你去吃饭，你就可以说I'll come by all means.「我一定会来的。」要注意的是，by any means同样也是「一定、无论如何」之意，但是通常用在否定句之中。还有一个词组by no means，这个的意思就是「绝不」
6. in my way of thinking
依字面上之意，是「以我思考的方式」，所以in my way of thinking就是「以我看来，就我而言」的意思。同样的意思，你也可以说as far as I'm concerned，或者简单一点的in my opinion。这都是一种谦虚表达意见的方式，在发言之前先声明这纯属个人的想法。
7. What's this all about?
这句话的意思是「这是怎么回事？」相当于What's up with that?，这句也完全等于What happened?或是What's going on?，当你搞不清楚状况时，这几句话都可以为你除疑解惑。不过用What's this all about?来寻求解答时，是比较想知道事情的来龙去脉，而不仅只是想知道发生什么事而已。
8. a sight for soar eyes
这是美语中一个口语化的说法，「看到你真是消除眼睛疲劳」意思就是「人见人爱的悦目之物」，白话一点就是「见到你真好」，有点像是见到救星的那种感觉，或者是看到好久不见的朋友，也可以用上这一句话。比如说你刚吃完一顿大餐，酒足饭饱之余才发现没带钱，正当不知所措准备进厨房洗碗时，看到了好友就在别桌用餐，总算露出一线生机，你就可以跟你的朋友说：You are a sight for soar eyes.
9. get a word in
word 当作「话」来用，按字面上来解释get a word in就是「插话」的意思，比较特殊的是，这里是指「（在别人不停地谈话时），找到插话的机会」，而且一般大部分是用否定方式not get a word in edgewise (edgeways)表示，如Jean didn't let me get a word in edgewise.「珍不让我有插话的机会。」因此，每当有人高谈阔论，滔滔不绝，说得让你连插句话的机会都没有时，你就可以利用此一佳句跟人抱怨。
10. You're going to love it here.
要表达喜欢一个地方，你可以说I like / love this place.，或是说成更道地的I like /love it here.。这里的it是指「气氛」atmosphere而言，若是你要跟别人挂保证，担保他一定会喜欢上某个地方，你就可以对他说You're going to (You'll) like/ love it here.。 [原始链接]

For the sake of taking care of him, his younger brother BECame his shadow, never leaving him alone for years. Except for writing with his toes, he was completely unable to do anything in his life.
One late night, he suffered from diarrhea1 and had to wake up his younger brother. His younger brother accompanied him into the toilet and then went back the dorm to wait. But being so tired, his younger brother fell asleep, leaving him on the toilet for two hours till the teacher on duty discovered him. As the two brothers GREw up together, they had their share of problems and they would often quarrel. Then one day, his younger brother wanted to live separate from him, living his own life, as many normalpeople do. So he was heart-broken and didn't know what to do.
A similar misfortune befell a girl, too. One night her mother, who suffered from chronic2 mental illness disappeared. So her father went out looking for her mother, leaving her alone at home. She tried to prepare meals for her parents, only to overturn the kerosene3 light on the stove, resulting in a fire which took her hands away.
Though her elder sister who was studying in another city, showed her willingness to take care of her, she was determined to be completely independent. At school, she always studied hard. Most of all she learned to be self-reliant. Once she wrote the following in her composition: "I am lucky. Though I lost my arms, I still have legs; I am lucky. Though my wings are broken, my heart can still fly."
One day, the boy and the girl were both invited to appear on a television interview program. The boy told the TV host about his uncertain future at being left on his own, whereas the girl was full of enthusiasm for her life. They both were asked to write something on a piece of paper with their toes. The boy wrote: My younger brother's arms are my arms；while the girl wrote: Broken wings, flying heart.
They had both endured the same ordeal4, but their different attitudes determined the nature of their lives. It is true that life is unpredictable5. Disasters can strike at any time. How you handle misfortune when confronted with it, is the true test of your character. If you choose only to complain and escape from the ordeal, it will always follow you wherever you go. The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming.
Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions. But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky.
The worst had happened; everything was lost.
He was stunned with grief and anger. "God how could you do this to me!" he cried.
Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. "How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied.
It is easy to get discouraged when things are going bad.
But we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering.
Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground it just may be a smoke signal that summons the grace of God.
For all the negative things we have to say to ourselves, God has a positive answer for it .

There was once a poor Prince, who had a kingdom. His kingdom was very small,
but still quite large enough to marry upon; and he wished to marry.
It was certainly rather cool of him to say to the Emperor''s daughter, "Will
you have me?" But so he did; for his name was renowned far and wide; and there
were a hundred princesses who would have answered, "Yes!" and "Thank you
kindly." We shall see what this princess said.

It happened that where the Prince''s father lay buried, there grew a rose
tree--a most beautiful rose tree, which blossomed only once in every five
years, and even then bore only one flower, but that was a rose! It smelt so
sweet that all cares and sorrows were forgotten by him who inhaled its
fragrance.
And furthermore, the Prince had a nightingale, who could sing in such a manner
that it seemed as though all sweet melodies dwelt in her little throat. So the
Princess was to have the rose, and the nightingale; and they were accordingly
put into large silver caskets, and sent to her.
The Emperor had them brought into a large hall, where the Princess was playing
at "Visiting," with the ladies of the court; and when she saw the caskets with
the presents, she clapped her hands for joy.
"Ah, if it were but a little pussy-cat!" said she; but the rose tree, with its
beautiful rose came to view.
"Oh, how prettily it is made!" said all the court ladies.
"It is more than pretty," said the Emperor, "it is charming!"
But the Princess touched it, and was almost ready to cry.
"Fie, papa!" said she. "It is not made at all, it is natural!"
"Let us see what is in the other casket, before we get into a bad humor," said
the Emperor. So the nightingale came forth and sang so delightfully that at
first no one could say anything ill-humored of her.
"Superbe! Charmant!" exclaimed the ladies; for they all used to chatter French,
each one worse than her neighbor.
"How much the bird reminds me of the musical box that belonged to our blessed
Empress," said an old knight. "Oh yes! These are the same tones, the same
execution."
"Yes! yes!" said the Emperor, and he wept like a child at the remembrance.
"I will still hope that it is not a real bird," said the Princess.
"Yes, it is a real bird," said those who had brought it. "Well then let the
bird fly," said the Princess; and she positively refused to see the Prince.
However, he was not to be discouraged; he daubed his face over brown and
black; pulled his cap over his ears, and knocked at the door.
"Good day to my lord, the Emperor!" said he. "Can I have employment at the
palace?"
"Why, yes," said the Emperor. "I want some one to take care of the pigs, for
we have a great many of them."
So the Prince was appointed "Imperial Swineherd." He had a dirty little room
close by the pigsty; and there he sat the whole day, and worked. By the
evening he had made a pretty little kitchen-pot. Little bells were hung all
round it; and when the pot was boiling, these bells tinkled in the most
charming manner, and played the old melody,
"Ach! du lieber Augustin,
Alles ist weg, weg, weg!"*
* "Ah! dear Augustine!
All is gone, gone, gone!"
But what was still more curious, whoever held his finger in the smoke of the
kitchen-pot, immediately smelt all the dishes that were cooking on every
hearth in the city--this, you see, was something quite different from the
rose.
Now the Princess happened to walk that way; and when she heard the tune, she
stood quite still, and seemed pleased; for she could play "Lieber Augustine";
it was the only piece she knew; and she played it with one finger.
"Why there is my piece," said the Princess. "That swineherd must certainly
have been well educated! Go in and ask him the price of the instrument."
So one of the court-ladies must run in; however, she drew on wooden slippers
first.
"What will you take for the kitchen-pot?" said the lady.
"I will have ten kisses from the Princess," said the swineherd.
"Yes, indeed!" said the lady.
"I cannot sell it for less," rejoined the swineherd.
"He is an impudent fellow!" said the Princess, and she walked on; but when she
had gone a little way, the bells tinkled so prettily
"Ach! du lieber Augustin,
Alles ist weg, weg, weg!"
"Stay," said the Princess. "Ask him if he will have ten kisses from the ladies
of my court."
"No, thank you!" said the swineherd. "Ten kisses from the Princess, or I keep

And the court-ladies placed themselves in front of her, and spread out their
dresses--the swineherd got ten kisses, and the Princess--the kitchen-pot.
That was delightful! The pot was boiling the whole evening, and the whole of
the following day. They knew perfectly well what was cooking at every fire
throughout the city, from the chamberlain''s to the cobbler''s; the court-ladies
danced and clapped their hands.
"We know who has soup, and who has pancakes for dinner to-day, who has
cutlets, and who has eggs. How interesting!"
"Yes, but keep my secret, for I am an Emperor''s daughter."
The swineherd--that is to say--the Prince, for no one knew that he was other
than an ill-favored swineherd, let not a day pass without working at
something; he at last constructed a rattle, which, when it was swung round,
played all the waltzes and jig tunes, which have ever been heard since the
creation of the world.

It was certainly rather cool of him to say to the Emperor''s daughter, "Will

The Emperor had them brought into a large hall, where the Princess was playing
at "Visiting," with the ladies of the court; and when she saw the caskets with
the presents, she clapped her hands for joy.
"Ah, if it were but a little pussy-cat!" said she; but the rose tree, with its
beautiful rose came to view.
"Oh, how prettily it is made!" said all the court ladies.
"It is more than pretty," said the Emperor, "it is charming!"
But the Princess touched it, and was almost ready to cry.
"Fie, papa!" said she. "It is not made at all, it is natural!"
"Let us see what is in the other casket, before we get into a bad humor," said
the Emperor. So the nightingale came forth and sang so delightfully that at
first no one could say anything ill-humored of her.
"Superbe! Charmant!" exclaimed the ladies; for they all used to chatter French,
each one worse than her neighbor.
"How much the bird reminds me of the musical box that belonged to our blessed
Empress," said an old knight. "Oh yes! These are the same tones, the same
execution."

“我想他是疯了！”公主说。于是她就走开了。不过她没有走几步路，便又停了下来。“我们应该鼓励艺术才是！”她说。“我是皇帝的女儿啊！告诉他，像上次一样，他可以得到十个吻，其余的可以由我的侍女给他。”
“哎呀！我们可不愿意干这种事情！”侍女们齐声说。
“废话！”公主说。“我既然可以让人吻几下，你们当然也可以的。请记住：是我给你们吃饭，给你们钱花的。”
这样，侍女们只得又到猪倌那儿去一趟。
“我要公主亲自给我一百个吻，”他是，“否则双方不必谈什么交易了。”
“你们都站拢来吧！”她说。所有的侍女都围着她站着；于是猪倌就开始接吻了。
“围着猪倌的一大群人是干什么的？”皇帝问。他这时已经走到阳台上来了。他揉揉双眼，戴上眼镜。“怎么，原来是侍女们在那儿捣什么鬼！我要亲自下去看一下。”
他把便鞋后跟拉上——这本来是一双好鞋子；他喜欢随意把脚伸进去，所以就把后跟踩塌了。
天啊，你看他那副匆忙的样子！
他一跑进院子，就轻轻地走过去。侍女们都在忙于计算吻的数目，为的是要使交易公平，不使他吻得太多或太少。她们都没有注意到皇帝的到来。皇帝轻轻地踮起脚尖来。
“这是怎么一回事呀？”他看到他们接吻的时候说。当猪倌正被吻到第八十六下的时候，他就用拖鞋在他们的头上打了几下。“滚你们的！”皇帝说，因为他真的生气了。于是公主和猪倌一齐被赶出了他的国土。
公主站在屋外，哭了起来。猪倌也发起牢骚来。天正下着大雨。
“唉，我这个可怜人！”公主说。“我要是答应那个可爱的王子倒好了！唉，我是多么不幸啊！”
猪倌于是走到一株大树后面，擦掉脸上的颜色，脱掉身上破烂的衣服，穿上一身王子的服装，又走了出来。他是那么好看，连这位公主都不得不在他面前弯下腰来。
“你，我现在有点瞧不起你了，”他说，“一个老老实实的王子你不愿意要，玫瑰和夜莺你也不欣赏；但是为了得到一个玩具，你却愿意去和一个猪倌接吻。现在你总算得到报应了。”
于是他走进他的王国，把她关在门外，并且把门闩也插上了。现在只有她站在外边，唱——
啊，我亲爱的奥古斯丁，
一切都完了，完了，完了！
关于这篇童话，安徒生说：“《猪倌》带有一个古老丹麦民间故事的痕迹。这个故事是我在儿时听到的——当然我不能照原样把它复述出来。”他赋予它以新念：“一个老老实实的王子你不愿意要，玫瑰和夜莺你也不欣赏；但是为了得到一个玩具，你却愿意去和一个猪倌接吻。”这篇作品实际上是一篇有关统治阶级生活的无聊、头脑愚蠢的生动而又深刻的素描。
